Spain is in Love With Electric Cars

It’s encouraging to read about the comeback of the electric car after it was nearly crushed by the oil industry in California.  I’m talking about the unfortunate case of the GM EV1 of the 1990s.

If you have been following my posts, you are aware of the promising cars that are now being manufactured by Tesla, Toyota and Aptera.  I’m very excited about this issue, since it will be a step in the right direction to lessen the emission of greenhouse gases.

According to Triplepundit, Spain aims to put 1 million electric cars on the road by 2014.  This great news was announced by Spain’s Minister of Industry, Business and Tourism, Miguel Sebastian, on Tuesday.    It clearly shows how serious the Zapatero government is regarding saving energy and boosting energy efficiency in Spain.

The Plan, which Spain’s Council of Ministers are expected to approve August 1, will be implemented this year and carry on through 2011. It’s estimated that Spain will save between 5.8 and 6.4 million tons of oil over the three-year period as a result of this energy reduction plan.

“The electric vehicle is the future and the engine of an industrial revolution,” Sebastian told members of the National Industry Commission. Higher oil prices and growing use and intensity of fossil fuel cost Spain some 17 billion euros last year, according to the Minister.

Spain’s legislators are currently studying legislation to provide incentives which will increase the use of public transportation, promote substitution of incandescent light bulbs with lower consumption bulbs, and provide mobile phone coverage in subways. Also among the measures being considered, are reducing fuel exports by 11 percent and reducing speed limits in cities.

If only our government officials would pay attention to the green provisions being taken by responsible legislators in other countries.  Panama is in dire need to adopt these energy conservation measures with a deep sense of urgency.

Building Wind Turbines With Good Taste

Thanks to oil’s soaring prices, people are now more interested in adopting cleaner and environment-friendly energy resources than before. Some of the most popular renewable energy resources are:

  • Biofuels
  • Biomass
  • Geothermal
  • Hydro Power
  • Solar Power
  • Tidal Power
  • Wave Power
  • Wind Power

I’ve penned a couple of posts about wind and solar power. These are my favorite renewable resources, because they have a great potential in Panama, the country where I live. If only our government officials would take their dark glasses off to see reality.

Texas is doing just fine making huge investments in wind power building giant wind turbines in a place called Pampa located northeast of Amarillo on the Texas panhandle. Famous oilman T. Boone Pickens, is investing $10 billion to build the world’s largest wind farm near Pampa, Texas.

Even though it has been demonstrated over and over again that wind power is one of the cheapest and cleanest alternative for oil, many people are against wind farm projects because they say they are ugly and pollute the scenery of country roads.

Wind turbines don’t necessarily have to be cold and ugly as their detractors say. I’ve just seen very imaginative and beautiful wind turbines designed in Europe which resemble moving works of art blowing in the wind.

You can take your pick from 3 megawatt offshore monsters, to zero energy windmill skyscrapers, kite flown turbines and giant seabed anchored super-turbines, held aloft by blimps. Please click here to find a picture gallery of the most futuristic and quixotic designs for wind turbines. By far the most beautiful way to harness energy.

Enjoy and please spread the word for the adoption of clean energy resources in your neck of the woods. With imagination, they can also be works of art in motion. Adios!

Texas is Puffing Other States Away

Texas is determined to be the leading state in the Union harnessing wind energy.  Texas officials gave the go-ahead Thursday to the nation’s largest wind-power project, a plan to build billions of dollars worth of new transmission lines to bring pollution-free energy from gusty West Texas to urban areas.

Texas already generates about 5,000 megawatts of wind power, more than any other state.  Most of Texas’ wind-energy production is in petroleum-producing West Texas, where nearly 4,000 wind turbines tower over oil pump jacks and capture the breeze that blows across the flat and largely barren landscape.  This wind-abundant zone is known as the “wind corridor” which extends from the Canadian border to West Texas.

The enormous Lone Star state is already the nation’s leader in wind power, but when said plan is fully implemented (pending final approval), it’ll produce more wind energy than the next closest 14 states combined.  Granted, customers will be paying more ($4 per month is the current estimate) for all this clean energy, but environmentalists assert that the cost is minor when looking at just how much this will help out Mother Earth.

“People think about oil wells and football in Texas, but in 10 years they’ll look back and say this was a brilliant thing to do,” added Patrick Woodson, vice president of E.On Climate & Renewables North America, which has about 1,200 megawatts of wind projects already in use or on the drawing board in Texas.

Supporters called the move a critical expansion of the “renewable energy superhighway,” predicting it will spur wind energy projects, create jobs, reduce energy costs and reduce pollution.

The new plan would not directly build a slew of new turbines, but would add transmission lines capable of moving about 18,000 megawatts. One expert said that is enough to power more than 4 million Texas homes.

As stated in my recent post “Exploting a ‘Wind Corridor’ in America,” one of wind’s most surprising backers is legendary Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens.

Pickens’ company, Mesa Power, is purchasing hundreds of wind turbines to eventually cover 400,000 acres near Pampa, Texas, and generate enough power for more than 1.3 million homes. “We are making Pampa the wind capital of the world,” Pickens said last May.

Pickens said it would be the world’s largest wind farm at a cost that could grow to $12 billion before its scheduled completion in 2014.

There is no doubt that Texas officials are correctly thinking of a future without significant air pollution and no foreign oil dependency.  It’s only responsible to switch to clean renewable energy resources such as wind, waves, bio fuels, solar, thermal and others.  When that happens the OPEP countries can keep their sticky oil.  Way to go Texas!

Exploiting a "Wind Corridor" in America

Wind Power

As the price of oil escalates into unprecedented records, countries around the world are looking for other domestic energy resources. Some of the alternatives which would take them off the hook of international oil dependency are:

  • Coal
  • Natural Gas
  • Hydro
  • Bio Fuels
  • Solar
  • Nuclear

In the United States, oil mogul and corporate raider T. Boone Pickens launched an energy plan and social-networking campaign last week that calls for replacing Middle Eastern oil with Midwestern wind.

The energy plan would exploit the country’s “wind corridor” from the Canadian border to West Texas to produce 20 percent of the country’s electricity.

Transmission lines would be built to transport the power to places in the United States where the population centers are concentrated. The natural gas, now used to fuel power plants, would instead be used as a transportation fuel, which releases less evergreen gases than gasoline and is domestic.

Pickens said that getting 20 percent of the U.S.’ electricity from wind and diverting natural gas to transportation could be done in 10 years “if there is the right leadership.”

He proposed that the private sector finance the investment, which would result in a one-third reduction, equal to $230 billion, in the U.S.’ yearly payments to foreign oil-producing countries.

T. Boone Pickens has already invested heavily in wind, notably a planned 4,000-megawatt wind farm in his native state Texas.

Investing in wind energy is a powerful idea if you have sufficient wind resources in your area. I think this is the case of Panama which is crossed by powerful winds from both the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. If we could put in place several wind-driven power plants in Panama, our dependency on foreign oil would be zero and more resources could be allocated to critical social issues such as education, health and security.

Using wind power to generate electricity is a “win-win proposition”—if we could only set it in motion.

Panama was ready to receive a fresh supply of rain by mid April. No joy. We are now in the middle of May and Mother Nature has been stingy with its tropical rainfall. As a result of a prolonged drought, the water level at the dams have reached a critical level for the necessary generation of electricity.

On several days, Panama has broken the record for consumption of electricity. A unprecedented boom in the construction industry in addition to the drought has increased energy demand to dangerous levels. If Panama does not contain this high demand, then it will be necessary to cut the energy supply in Panama City by geographical sectors. This emergency action has been taken before after severe dry weather seasons.

Every time I write about our deteriorating environment—caused by Global Warming and Climate Change—I feel a little bit concerned of being considered an alarmist and a paranoid. I’m aware than many people still feel that these issues are jokes or hoaxes invented by mentally unbalanced weirdos. They shut their eyes in an effort to pretend this is not happening and everything is a rose garden. The truth of the matter is that Global Warming is really happening right under our noses. Our most reputed scientists are bending themselves backwards demonstrating that Global Warming is a real threat in every forum possible around the world.

In view of the above, I hereby apologize if I offend some of my readers, however I will continue to write about this controversial subject. I feel it’s my responsibility to let the facts known.

I’m so glad to see how countries around the world are now interested in environmental issues such as global warming and climate change. A few years ago these issues were considered jokes or hoaxes. Gradually, this wrong and indifferent attitude is changing.

At 8 pm on March 29th millions of people in some of the world’s major cities used the simple action of turning off their lights for 1 hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming and climate change.

Global warming and climate change is a hot environmental issue as our planet gets intoxicated with an excess of greenhouse gases. Deforestation is a big contributor to global warming and climate change. We are losing approximately 86,400 football fields of rain forest everyday due to illegal loggers, land-hungry peasants and giant plantations. 31,536,000 football fields of rain forest every year really adds up!

Due to this environmental catastrophe, the scientific community is calling for the global protection of our rain forests. By saving our trees, we contribute to save our planet.

Israel has taken a bold step forward to decrease its dependency on petroleum which it mainly imports from Russia. Renault-Nissan, the government of Israel and an electric charging station start-up (Project Better Place) are mounting an effort to make electric cars part of ordinary life in Israel in the next decade. The Israeli-led project main goal is to develop alternative energy sources and slash oil dependency.

Project Better Place is expected to build 500,000 electric service stations in the country. At these stations, attendants will swap out depleted batteries and put in fully charged ones. This saves the several hours typically required to charge a lithium-ion battery pack made for cars. (You can also charge the batteries at home.)

In the Northern Hemisphere the weather is bitter cold. However, it's anticipated that next summer it will be sizzling hot. So, in case you are a winter lover, enjoy the cold weather while it lasts.

According to federal scientists at NOAA's National Climatic Data Center, 2007 was the warmest year ever recorded for the Earth's land areas, with an average temperature about 1.84 degrees above the long-term average. Global weather records began in 1880. For the entire Earth's surface, including the oceans, scientists report that the global temperature was the 5th-warmest on record.
