Everybody knew this day would come, and when it did, it touched their hearts deep inside. Yesterday was the final full day job at Microsoft for Bill Gates.

On his last day at Microsoft as a full employee, Bill Gates went on stage to look-back with his longtime friend Steve Ballmer, and neither man could hold back tears as Ballmer handed Gates a large scrapbook as a farewell present.

The Microsoft-Yahoo Deal Goes Sour

Today Steve Ballmer is busy crashing chairs against his office walls. After working like a madman to reach a deal with Yahoo, there was no white smoke after the negotiations ended.

The hottest story in the technological corridors, is that Microsoft is withdrawing its offer for Yahoo after talks between the two companies broke down on Saturday.

Microsoft Fined a Record $1.3 Billion

Today the European Union fined Microsoft a record $1.3 billion for delaying compliance for previous regulatory decisions regarding the amount they charge competing businesses for software information.

For Microsoft, its fine was calculated based on the 488 days it was out of compliance. And while the EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes, characterized the fine as "substantial", it only represents 60 percent of the total assessment the Commission could have levied on Microsoft.

EU regulators said the company charged “unreasonable prices” until last October to software developers who wanted to make products compatible with the Windows desktop operating system.

Microsoft Continues to Support Windows XP

A positive news about Microsoft this week, is that it continues to support Windows XP, even though Windows Vista is their current cash cow. Microsoft said on Tuesday that it is making public its latest test version of Windows XP/Service Pack 3.

The Windows honchos from Redmond said Release Candidate 2 of XP SP3 will be available after 5 p.m. PST via Microsoft’s download center. “We’re broadening the availability of the release candidate in order to receive further user feedback prior to the release of Windows XP SP3,” it said in a statement.

It rained again in Microsoft's parade. Tom Ferris, an independent resercher of Mission Viejo, California, needed just 15 minutes to find a bug in Internet Explorer 7 browser. Tom Ferris published his findings just hours after Microsoft released the beta code. You can read his findings here .

Google came swinging at Consumer Electronic Show (CES) held at Las Vegas this week. There were two persistent rumors in Blogsphere regarding Google's next strategic moves. One was the purchase of Opera web browser and the other one was the introduction of a low-cost Google computer. Both rumors were flatly denied by Larry Page, Google's Co-founder and President. Having set those rumors aside, Google announced two aggresive moves directly aimed at the rest of the Internet heavyweights--Microsoft, Apple and Yahoo.

Microsoft has mysterious ways of hiding things from its users. That is the case with Windows XP's Quick Launch Toolbar. Perhaps Bill wants us to buy those voluminous Microsoft reference textbooks which causes sleepiness just by looking at them, mind you. Well, today I have a useful tip to launch programs from your task bar.

Microsoft is firing its cannons trying to maintain its market share on its core products (cash cows) like Windows operating system and Microsoft Office. Windows Vista will soon be released as well as Microsoft Office "12" (Beta 1). The next release of Office reveals sweeping changes to the interface, graphics, and tools within this productivity suite.
