July is now over and soon we will hear soft children's voices singing the classical Christmas carols. It's incredible how time flies. It was only yesterday I was toasting for a Happy New Year 2008.

Now that July is over, I'm eager to find out who was the winner in the monthly web browser's frantic race. According to statistics from Net Applications, Mozilla Firefox continues to be the clear winner and Safari the clear loser.

Below is a table showing the performance of the top browsers:

Top Browsers Market Share - July 2008
(Expressed in Percentages)

Internet Explorer 73.02 73.01 0.01

Comments:

Mozilla Firefox continued to increase its global market participation, but not at the expense of Internet Explorer which held its ground in June. Almost one of every five Internet user uses Firefox as its preferred browser. I would have sworn Firefox was going to reach the 20 percent landmark in July as a result of the fanfare created by Firefox 3. However I have to admit the new version did pretty well. It reached 5.67 percent of the market in July compared to 2.31 percent in June. That's pretty good.

With more and more Web 2.0 applications becoming available, the browser is becoming as important as the operating system. And, with the proliferation of mobile devices and the many new ways to access the Internet, the browser becomes ever more critical. Users are demanding more features, better security, complete site rendering compatibility (standards), and now rendering speed is becoming a differentiator.

Apple Safari is losing its charm. It lost 0.17 percent in July even though the iPhone was raising eyebrows everywhere and the Mac computer was selling like hot cakes.

Opera browser for desktops is not attractive to mainstream users. Their hot spot is in the mobile arena where they lead the pack by a wide margin.

And last, but certainly not least, Netscape is a die hard guy. Even though AOL pulled the plug from this legendary Internet icon, it still attracts web users. In July it crawled to a 0.69 percent global market share tied up with Opera.

That's it folks. Let's keep our fingers crossed and see if Mozilla Firefox breaks the 20 percent barrier next month. Arrivederci!

Dan Burkhardt, Marketing Vice President of Flock Web social browser announced yesterday, that they have come up with their second beta version for Flock 2.

“Everybody loves the latest improvements Mozilla’s Firefox 3 technology: much improved performance, tighter security and improved usability. However, what if you could have all of those great features AND all of the award-winning innovations that Flock offers? (That would be the integrated People, Media, WebMail, Photo Uploader, Blog Editor, Feed Reader, and more.) Today, we’re making our second beta of Flock 2 available for everyone to enjoy, and you can take your browsing experience from great…to UN-BE-LIEVABLE for free.”

Flock 2 Beta (two) includes over 175 bug fixes, and incorporates Mozilla’s Firefox latest security and stability patch from their 3.0.1 release. Flock 2 Beta (two) is fast, even more stable and polished.

Now you can have the best of both worlds. Flock 2 includes all of the award-winning Flock features that people are raving about, PLUS all of the enhancements introduced by the latest FireFox 3 technology from Mozilla.

I prefer to wait until the finished product is ready, in a bid to avoid all the crashing and freezing which takes place with most beta software. Remember what they say about the pioneers being the ones with the arrows in their backs.

However, if you are one of the braves at heart, and want to participate in the adventure of trying out a beta software, you can go ahead and download Flock Beta (two) by clicking here. Good Luck!

The SeaMonkey Development Team announced Tuesday their latest stability and security patch identified as version 1.1.11.  SeaMonkey 1.1.11 closes several security vulnerabilities and fixes several smaller problems found in previous versions. With that, SeaMonkey stays at the same level of security as its sibling Mozilla Firefox 2, which is issuing updates for the same problems this week as well.

The SeaMonkey Team urges users of older SeaMonkey versions, including the SeaMonkey 1.0.x series, which no longer receives security updates, to upgrade. Additionally, the team continues to strongly urge people still using the old Mozilla Suite or Netscape 4, 6 or 7 to upgrade to the new SeaMonkey 1.1.11 version.

All these older software packages suffer from a large and steadily increasing number of security vulnerabilities because they are no longer being maintained. SeaMonkey 1.1.11 is a modern, drop-in replacement, providing the same familiar suite functionality with additional features and fully up to date security.

SeaMonkey 1.1.11 is available for free download by clicking here. Good Day!

As part of Mozilla Corporation’s ongoing stability and security update process, Firefox 3.0.1 is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux for free download from their main website.

Exactly one month after the original Firefox 3.0 release comes its first security and stability update labeled Firefox 3.0.1, the first also to feature the new three digit numbering method instead of previous 4-digit scheme.

Firefox 3.0.1 fixed several issues found in Firefox 3:

  • Fixed several security issues.
  • Fixed several stability issues.
  • Fixed an issue where the phishing and malware database did not update on first launch.
  • Under certain circumstances, Firefox 3.0 did not properly save the SSL certificate exceptions list.
  • Updated the internal Public Suffix list.
  • In certain cases, installing Firefox 2 in the same directory in which Firefox 3 has been installed resulted in Firefox 2 being unstable. This issue was fixed as part of Firefox 2.0.0.15.
  • Fixed an issue where, when printing a selected region of content from the middle of a page, some of the output was missing (bug 433373).
  • Fixed a Linux issues where, for users on a PPP connection (dialup or DSL) Firefox always started in “Offline” mode (bug 424626).

The Mozilla Development Team strongly recommends that all Firefox users upgrade to this latest release. If you already have Firefox 3.0, you will receive an automated update notification within 24 to 48 hours. This update can also be applied manually by selecting “Check for Updates…” from the Help menu.
